Resolution Calling on Troy City Council to Support the Social Security Administration

Adopted unanimously on May 20, 2025
WHEREAS, the current Trump administration has announced a plan to reduce staff significantly at the Social Security Administration and implement other cost-cutting measures, such as the closure of neighborhood Social Security offices across the country, including in Troy, New York, and;
WHEREAS, such staff cuts and cost-cutting measures would negatively impact the millions of Americans who rely on the trained civil servants to process applications for Retirement, Disability, Medicare, and SSI, and receive their Social Security benefits, and;
WHEREAS, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 3343, the union which represents Social Security Administration employees in 14 field offices across the Capital District, Hudson Valley, and North Country, including the field office in downtown Troy, has urged members of the Troy City Council to introduce and adopt their “Resolution to Save Neighborhood Social Security Offices, Medicare, and Medicaid,” and;
WHEREAS, other municipalities in New York, including Albany, Hudson, Gloversville, Poughkeepsie, and Schenectady, have adopted this resolution.
THEREFORE, Be it resolved that the Troy Area Labor Council (TALC), AFL-CIO urges the Troy City Council to immediately introduce and adopt the AFGE Local 3343’s “Resolution to Save Neighborhood Social Security Offices, Medicare, and Medicaid,” and;
THEREFORE, Be it further resolved that upon adoption, TALC urges the Troy City Council to forward the resolution to its local elected counterparts across Rensselaer County urging them to take similar action, as their residents also rely on the services provided at the Troy Social Security field office, and;
THEREFORE, Be it finally resolved that upon adoption, TALC urges the Troy City Council to also forward the resolution to its New York State Senate, State Assembly, and federal Congressional representatives urging them to take similar action to protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
